Checklists are one of the must-have items of the prudent pilot. And yet, each pilot is different and either likes to do certain things in a different order or needs certain visual or verbal cues to find the necessary data quickly when needed.

This doc is the summary of a rather long and interesting conversation on the topic of checklists where various owners contributed their own versions. Feel free to use the one you like most and modify them as you see fit.

Avidyne

  • Doug: Attached are my checklist for our Avidyne 400. They are in word so you can revise them how you see fit. The 2 preflight are cut to size and laminated back to back as are the starting the engine and taxi/take-off. The flight checklist is cut to size, 5.5x8, and run off on a copy machine. They work for us. Use them or revise them at your own risk.

  • Rudy: I'm enclosing the latest iteration of my customized Lancair 400 checklist for anyone to copy and modify to suit your own tastes. This by no means represents the ultimate checklist.... I just know I like everything on 1 page (normal things on the front, emergency things on the back), and like to so things in a particular order that is slightly different from the factory checklist.

  • Tom: Here is a "custom" one-page checklist for my Avidyne 350. The checklists are based closely on the POH, but have been modified slightly (mostly in how tasks are grouped and ordered) to align more closely with the way I think about them -- and to reinforce some of the training I have received.

    The first two pages are intended to be printed on double-sided cardstock, laminated, and used for "normal" everyday operations. The third page is intended to be a stand-alone page that will be laminated, stored behind the passenger seat, and pulled out for unusual (but non-emergency) operations, including hot starts, starts using an auxiliary power cart, and short-field takeoffs.   • Bogdan: Took me a while to get it but ... better late than never I guess. Here is an updated checklist and also an emergency checklist for the 400. Print on both sides and laminate at Kinko's.

  • Bananero: Each of the pages gets progressively longer and the section title (each section is color coded) is printed on the bottom of each page. Just put your thumb on the page you want to see, flip your wrist and you are looking at the items you need for that phase of operation/flight. Print it out, cut it to size and have Kinkos (or your office) put a 3/8" wire spiral in the top edge. I didn't laminate it, but if you use a heavy weight card stock paper (like business card paper), it holds up pretty well and has the stiffness needed to "flip" the pages.
  • Jim: I took Bogdan's checklist (I liked the layout) and made my personal modifications. Page 1 includes normal procedures with some personal reminders, Page 2 includes emergency procedures. I removed items that I didn't feel I needed and added info other places. So here they are for what its worth.

  • kilolobo: I mostly use FLOW procedures, so i go and do the tasks and then just go with the checklist to see if i have forgotten something and then i go to the yellow and/or red items and double check them physically while i read the checklist.

  • Craig: Print on paper front to back, fold it over and that is all you need to safely operate the airplane, will fit in the side pocket too. This is the checklist the FAA approved for our 135 operation.
